The Dairy Council of California specifically states on their website that it is perfectly safe to drink milk even up to seven days past the best-by date (NOT an expiration date, best-by or use-by dates indicate when the quality of the product -- taste, texture, odor, appearance -- would begin to lessen, not when the product would be unsafe to consume. Sell-by dates indicate the date after which the original store can no longer sell the product; I often find such post-dated products at dollar stores, with a notice on the shelf nearby informing the customer of the fact that it is both legal and safe to sell, buy, and consume certain products past their sell-by dates). The key with milk is to check for spoilage by smelling it before you drink it, and to store it in the fridge between 38 and 40 degrees Fahrenheit, keeping the door shut as much as possible, and not leave it out on the table or counter, even if you're going to be using it repeatedly.

You can, but it won't taste good. you might get food poisoning too depending on how long it has been. I'm not sure if it can kill you though. Either way, I wouldn't try

Yes you can! Just give it the "smell" test. Once you've smelled even slightly spoiled milk you'll never forget that smell. I've been using the smell test to determine when to discard milk since I was old enough to live on my own, I'm in my 50's now and have NEVER gotten ill from drinking milk!

Also best before dates just say when the product is it's best... it's still fine afterwards sometimes.. dates need to be on everything these days too... even honey, syrup, water and sugar have dates on them... when do these things really start to taste any different?

No, not really. Milk is pasteurized before it is sold to you. This means that it is heated to temperatures that kill most of the bacteria (germs) that could make you sick. Milk does end up being contaminated just by being in your fridge. The germs that get into it cause the proteins and lactose to break down, and this is what causes the bad smell of old milk. Sometimes, instead of harmless bacteria, your milk might have dangerous bacteria in it that could make you really sick. Because you can't tell which bacteria are the ones in your milk, don't drink over dated milk, because it could make you sick.

Which percent of milk spoils the fastest after the expiration date?

Skim milk. The more fat in the milk, the longer it takes to spoil; cream will last a relatively long time, and butter can be left out on the counter for some time. While milk may often still taste norma and be safe to drink shortly after the expiration date, it is not recommended to push your luck.

How long after milk expired can you drink it?

The smell test is the best test. If it smells spoiled, it probably is. The average number of days the milk is still good after the expiration date is usally 3-4. I noticed that fat free or skim lasts longer than the regular high fat milk

Can you drink milk after expiry date?

It is okay as long as it does not smell bad. Do not let sit up to a week after the expiration date. Even if it does not look bad it may cause mild harm to the person that drinks it but if it is maximum 4 days after the expiration and it does not seem to have gone bad it okay to drink.

How would you know when milk is expired?

If it smelled sour and disgusting then it is expired. You could read the expiration date or you can drink it and see if you get sick.

What will happen if a ten year old drinks expired milk?

Spoiled milk will have the same effect as any other food poisoning. Symptoms include vomiting, diarrhea, and abdominal pain. Food poisoning is also known to cause fever or and/or allergic reactions as well (such as rashes). Milk is pasteurized however which means that most bacteria in the milk was killed during the production process. Despite pasteurization milk can still spoil. Stores usually put an expiration date on the container. I personally have drank milk that was 2 to 3 days beyond the expiration date by accident and nothing happened. If you notice any of the above symptoms seek professional medical assistance as soon as possible as any disease left untreated, even the common cold, can sometimes be dangerous.

Is it okay to drink chocolate milk after the sale date expires?

Some feel it is, but that expiration date is there for a reason. And a container of milk is simply not worth the risk of getting sick. I always go by the golden rule: "When in doubt, throw it out."
