its good if they have water available at all times-cold water too. most pups are not crazy about water left out all day.. 6 weeks is usually when the bigger Dog Breeds are weaned and not all moms will brake the weaning either. You should have water avalible at all times for pups. They should be drinking a little water by now. Some people will ween pups at 6 weeks old. If your pups are large breed then weening at 6 weeks should be fine. For the smaller breeds I would wait another week. You can also let the mother ween them. Just be sure and start them on a good quality PUPPY food. This should be dry food. You can get small bites if you have a tiny pup. Wet food is not good for dogs. It has a lot less nutrients in it. The dry is a lot better for them. Be sure and go to the vet and get them some wormer. You can also start there shots at this time. If you have any questions you should be able to ask your vet. Good luck and have fun with your pup. They should have started drinking water a couple of weeks before this point. Mothers milk is still just fine though (in addition to water). However, steer away from giving them milk in a dish... dog are lactose intollerent, and once they've been weened they shouldn't be offered milk. As for wormer... DON'T! It's poison. Never worm a pregnant bitch, and never worm a young puppy. It can cause permanent damage. Try crushed pumpkin seed... added to food it's a natural wormer. As far as food is concerned... that's another can of worms (pun intended). Do some research into the BARF (biologically appropriate raw foods) diet. It's a much better option than either dry or canned foods. We were told by our vet to always worm the pregnant bitch which we did for the last 3 wks of pregnancy. We have wormed our puppies at 2,5 and 8 wks. Worms are a very common cause of death for newly born pups.

You shouldn't give a dog milk in the first place, it may very well be lactose intolerant.

Sure. It will love you for the treat. But, in rare cases, a pup may not digest milk but vomit it up.

The dogs living on dairy farms get tons of milk to drink.

2nd Answer:

A 6 week old puppy is old enough to be fed dry puppy food (be sure to use a good name brand of puppy food). No milk of any kind is needed at this age. Never feed cow's milk or cream, will cause diarrhea. If you feel you have to put some type of milk over the dry food, use canned milk mixed one part water to one part canned milk. But at 6 weeks old, just use a good name brand dry puppy food. Feed it dry or with a little warm water over it. That is all the puppy needs. NO CREAM or Cow's milk.

1st Answer:

I'm not an expert, but my dog was 6 weeks when we got him, and he drank warm cream every night for weeks. He just turned 8.

I also used cream on his puppy food to soften it.

Yes you can. The dogs living on dairy farms get tons of milk to drink.

if a three week old puppy is still with its mother, the mother will nurse it until she knows it doesnt need to have milk any more, but if the puppy no longer lives with its mum you should feed it milk until its about five weeks old.

is mom still producing some milk?

Most breeders begin to wean their pups starting at week 3 and a half . They will start allowing mom to get out of the kennel for longer and longer, and only return to feed. She will have started to stand up anyway, in an effort to get away from her puppies, as they have teeth coming in.

For the next several weeks, she'll feed them less and less. You should start putting out a high quality dog food in a shallow pan, softened to mush with water or puppy milk replacer. If it's a really good quality of dog food, using the water is enough. But if the puppies are a little small, or weak, or have been sick -- or you think they could just use more nutrition, then using a milk replacer will help.

Many breeders will give mom milk replacer or chicken broth or extra scraps with her food, too. They will have already increased her diet to a higher protein/fat level, because nursing takes so much out of her.

Don't force the puppies to eat -- they'll start to nibble on the food as they see mom's interest in it eventually The puppies should remain together until they are 8-weeks of age. At first, mom will be eager to return to pups so she can drain her milk - which is painful. But over the next few weeks, mom will show less and less interest in going into the pen to feed, and will start to correct her pups when they try to eat or get too rough with their little teeth -- you should allow her to do this.

Don't place the puppies until 8-weeks of age. From 4-8 weeks is a critical development stage -- as the puppies play together, they learn dominance and submission - and learn how to take a correction from mom, and what is proper doggie etiquette. Don't forget, you should also have wormed the puppies, and given their first round of puppy vaccinations.

You should really read more about raising a litter on the internet. Raising puppies take a lot of work.
