Sometimes curse words come out of our mouths when we are very frustrated or want to emphasize something. If the words you use are not directed at anyone or targeting a particular type/group of people, it's generally OK to curse. Obviously, the people you are around matter greatly in terms of how appropriate it is. Cursing in front of children or in an academic or professional setting is not a good idea. If you are an adult in an appropriate setting and using words that don't target anyone, then cursing is fine. Curse words can make sentences more interesting and help you get your point across.

Well, to swear is to make an oath or affirmation that you are telling the truth. Jesus said (in James 5:12) "Above all, my brothers, do not swear--not by heaven or by earth or by anything else. Let your "Yes" be yes, and your "No," no, or you will be condemned."

But, if you mean "Is it a sin to use cuss (profanity) words," here are a few Bible verses:

  • "But now you must also rid yourselves of all such things as these: anger, rage, malice, slander, and filthy language from your lips." (Colossians 3:8)
  • "Do not let any unwholesome talk come out of your mouths, but only what is helpful for building others up according to their needs, that it may benefit those who listen." (Ephesians 4:29)
  • "If anyone, then, knows the good they ought to do and doesn't do it, it is sin for them." (James 4:17)

Which is correct - 'swear to you' or 'swear you'?

You can: * swear TO a person (make a binding verbal promise) * swear AT a person (curse them) * swear IN a person (make them a member of a jury or similar) but AFAIK you can't just swear a person.

Is it okay for parents to swear at their adult children?

No, I don't know about you. but if anybody swears at me, I don't like it. Based on this I feel that if I swear at someone else they won't like it either. Thus I do not think it is OK for parents to swear at their adult children. More than that, I don't think that is is OK for anybody to swear an anybody.
