was the vehicle drive in salt water? i.e. boat launching? then yes...otherwise..get a second opinion...

everyone should have a manual for their vehicle, and the library should have a professional manual available...in the reference section, you'll have to make copies of the important sections...good luck :)
It´s a very well known issue the problems with 1st gen durangos´ superior joint balls. Since they didn´t have a grease pin some went bad poping out leaving no control of the steering causing accidents (even rollovers with deaths in some cases).
I wouldn´t think it twice changing at least the top ones, specially if you use your D at high speeds and/or off road. You will find them from anything from $25-$80 each depending of the brand you choose. I would recommend the Moog´s which many of my off-roader friends say are the best.
you can change them yourself, you´ll need a special tool which is a lot cheaper than what any dealer will charge you to change them.
I´m not sure if the procedure is in it but download the service manual to see.
