Even a cheap filter is like 10$ and more over cool mist one`s are prone to microbial and bacterial growth. so its recommend you change them every season of use or 3 months once.
i uses a vicks one with the filter made of paper so cleaning is out of the question.I pick up a new one for 9$ from cvs.
