Why it is prescribed (Indications) : This medication is an alpha-glucosidase inhibitor, prescribed for diabetes mellitus. When it is not to be taken (Contraindications): Contraindicated in patients with inflammatory bowel disease, gastrointestinal obstruction, hernia, severe ketosis, diabetic hypersensitivity, pregnancy, lactation. Not to be used as single therapy in Insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus (IDDM). Pregnancy Category : A B C D X Category C : Animal reproduction studies have shown an adverse effect on the fetus and there are no adequate and well-controlled studies in humans, but potential benefits may warrant use of the drug in pregnant women despite potential risks. Dosage & When it is to be taken : PO- The recommended dose is 200-300 mcg 3 times/day. How it should be taken : It comes as a tablet to take by mouth, with food.
