It is safe as long as correct hygiene practices are followed.

If a cat, see if someone can change the box for you. If you have to change the box, wear some disposable gloves and a dust mask and make sure to wash your hands well after cleaning.

If an exotic animal like a turtle or lizard, it is very important to handle with care. Salmonella is in their fecal matter and can cause harm to a developing fetus. Wash your hands after handling (or don't handle at all) and do not allow the animal to roam the house. Clean the cage outside to prevent any feces from slipping out and being missed while cleaning.
