It depends on what you are going to use them for. If you are going to light a BBQ then the only hazardous thing I can think of is the lighter fluid. I personally like to use a BBQ can, you can buy one at Home Depot or Lowe's, it's just a large vertical metal container with a handle. I put dried twigs in the bottom and then load it with charcoal. Than after I light it I wait about 10-20 minutes for the briquettes to start burning. Then I remove the container and spread the coals out for my BBQ.
I can understand your concern, there may be some harmful chemicals in the briquettes, so I choose the ones that are not instant lighting, or quick starting. Those are the ones that have harmful chemicals in them that you may be concerned about.

You should start taking charcoal pills. You can find them at any drug store or even at Walmart. Take them regularly for about two weeks and your system will be safely flushed. Charcoal pills are safe for the baby and carry unwanted materials out of the digestive system.

Barbecue charcoal briquettes? If so, there are a few factors. Some briquette companies employ binding agents. Historically, they used glues that were not safe to inhale. While I don't think that they do that anymore, "self-lighting" charcoal is soaked in lighter fluid so as to make them easier to light. This fluid's vapors aren't good for you, either. Then there are things like "coal dust is bad for you!" and "do not touch the lit coals!" that are a little more obvious.
