Answer

It all depends on what brand of birth control you are on. If you are taking ortho-cyclin, ortho tri-cyclin, or ortho tri-cyclin Lo, I know it is only the first seven days of your first pack ever that it takes to become fully effective. But for any other birth control, read the instructions or provided infromation given, thats how I found out. If not, then be sure to ask your doctor. :o)

Answer

According to Yasmin, this brand needs no back-up birth control method if initiated on the first day of your period. However, it must be used for seven days if you are starting on the Sunday after beginning your period. My doctor advised that women only receive the full effectiveness of the birth control pill if it is used for a full 28-day cycle prior to having unprotected sex.
