Is it true that when the first settlers came to the US the natives couldn't perceive their ships for the simple fact that they'd never seen ships before?

The Aboriginals were much more capable of living from the land than the Europeans were, and in fact the Aboriginals had to show the Europeans how to find food and how to dress for the winter cold. Without their help the first groups of Europeans would have died off due to starvation and lack of vitamins in their diet.
