It is definitely below the average age that boys begin puberty.

No, it is not natural. 5 is very young for a boy to develop pubic hair. Boys enter puberty later than girls - Although there is a wide range of normal, they are usually around 10 to 12 years of age - lasting until around age 16 or 17.

"Precocious puberty" or early puberty can be defined (for medical purposes) as onset before 8 years in girls or 9 years in boys. As a first outward change in appearance - the growth of pubic hair in boys, with onset before 9.5 years.

While most children with precocious puberty are medically "normal", a 5 year old boy with pubic hair should see his pediatrician for an evaluation to rule out a serious medical condition.

Early sexual development deserves evaluation because it may:

- induce early bone maturation and reduce eventual adult height

- indicate the presence of a tumor or other serious problem

Even where there is no disease, unusually early puberty can have adverse effects on social behavior and psychological development.

The doctor will most likely run some blood tests and depending on those results may want an MRI scan.

Treatment will of course depend on the diagnoses but it's goal will be to suppress and slow down any further premature physical development.
