Let's put it this way: The Bible calls God by his Holy Name about 7000 times. The name is YHWH which if it is pronounced as it reads is IEHOWAH. This is just the reading of the Hebrew letters. According to Maimonides this is the way it should be read.
Therefore the form Jehovah is close enough to the original pronunciation, and is not a derivation of Adonai, as some suggest.
The Name has a meaning, which is Creator or Cause, I am what I am. Using the Name is acknowledging His Supremacy and his duties as the Originator of everything that exists.
On the other hand Jesus said in John 17 that he had made His name known to his disciples and that he will make his Name known. (in the future)
Therefore, if you are a Christian you do good if you use the Name of God, Jehovah.
