Kelfex is not related to penicilliin. Although it functions in the same way, it is part of a group of antibiotics called Sulfers. Some people who are allergic to Penicillin and its derivatives, can sometimes be allergic to Kelfex and Sulfers.

No, Keflex does not contain penicillin. It belongs to a class of antibiotics called cephalosporins. You should be aware that about 10% of patients who are penicillin allergic will also be allergic to cephalosporins as well. With oral medications it is usually only a minor reaction.

No. It is part of the cephalosporin family. However, in terms of Allergies there is a chance of cross sensitivity between penicillins and cephalosporins. If you are allergic to one, it would be wise to stay away from the other.

Is keflex in the penicillin family?

keflex) is a cephalosporin not in the penicillin family. They do have cross reactions so someone who is allergic to penicillins needs to be more careful and watch for signs of allergic reaction esp if it is given IV. I am allergic to penicillin but not to keflex.

Common medications are amoxicillin, keflex, penicillin or cephalexin.

If one is allergic to penicillin Is it safe to take Keflex?

It depends what the allergy was to penicillin. Overall, there is around a 7-10% chance of cross-sensitivity (meaning you may be allergic to Keflex if allergic to penicillins). If you developed a rash/hives from penicillin, the doctor MAY prescribe Keflex if the Dr. believes Keflex is the best antibiotic choice for you. If you had an anaphylaxic reaction (meaning you had a life threatening reaction to penicillins), the doctor should NOT prescribe keflex. He or she should prescribe something else. Make sure you let your Dr. and pharmacist know all allergies you have to prevent any problems in the future.
