Theology in the most simplistic sense is the study of God or what we teach about God. There are two primary ways we come to know God: reason and religious experience (some add a third, revelation).

Liberation theology explores what we know about God through the experience of God of a specific group of people, namely the poor and/or the oppressed. Some liberation theologies are culture centric and easily misunderstood outside of the context of the audience of the culture.

Some well known liberation theologians include: Gustavo Gutierrez (Peru), Jurgen Moltmann (Germany), Priscilla Pope-Levinson (US), James Cone (US, African American/black), Paul Gauthier (France), Gérard Jean-Juste (Haiti), and Letty Russell (US, feminist).
