Hi,

I just got the MV650 mendini violin and am very surprised and impressed. The tone is very nice, the strings play well and setting it up has not been much of an issue at all. My music-teacher friend says I really lucked out with this one, ordering over the internet. The only real issue is that the case that came with it is not long enough to hold a full-length bow. But I do have another case that will work.

Hope this helps,

No. The problem with Mendini and other lower priced imports is they are trying to manufacture an instrument that meets a price point rather than manufacturing an instrument that meets the needs of the music student. These instruments are made using inferior materials. They are often in need of repair and repair shops are not likely to work on them, or at least not willing to guarantee the work. Students will be frustrated because they are playing an instrument that is in constant need of adjustment. Band directors will be frustrated because the student is often without an instrument because it is in for repair. You will be better served to buy or rent an instrument from a reputable music store. Some brands to consider are Selmer, Yamaha, Buffet, Leblanc, and Artley.

Not at all. Their flutes average around 110$ which indicates very low quality. Reviews have also stated that Mendini flutes are junk. Also, they are mass produced somewhere in the East to be sold very cheap.

Invest in a Flute from a reputable brand/maker. Some I recommend are Powell, Gemeinhardt, Pearl, and Yamaha (Allegro). There are obviously others but there's a starter list.

No. It's a cheap import, made with inferior materials. Keep looking.

That's a terrible brand. It's poorly built, using cheap materials. Repair shops won't even touch them. Keep looking.

Not especially. It might be passable as a beater horn for marching band, but that's about it.

Is a mendini baritone a good brand?

A Mendini by Cecilio baritone or euphonium is a good student instrument. Meaning it is a good instrument if you are just looking for one to play in a middle or high school band and do not plan on playing it in college. You can get a Cecilio euphonium for as little as $340 brand new so they would be very good for someone that is planning on playing in school but not professionally. If you are planing on being a professional or going to play in college you probably want to wait and buy a really good compensating euphonium with a brand name like Besson; but they will cost around $6,000 - $7,000 brand new and around $3,000 for one that a couple years old.

Mendini and Cecilio are both junk brands. Buying one of their horns is a waste of money unless you're only planning to use it as a novelty.

Violin brand student?

Generally, student violins are not bought based upon the brand, but by the maker of the violin. Any violin that one buys that is less than roughly 250 USD is not going to be of very good quality. If you buy a violin online, you might have to get the bridge completely readjusted (just for your information). It would be much better to go to a music store or a violin shop and see if you can get a nice violin for a reasonable price instead of buying a violin online.
