Two red paints use mercuric sulfide: 1) CADMIUM VERMILLION RED (AKA Cadmium Mercury Red; Pigment Red 113) Ingestion-No significant acute toxicity, Inhalation-Highly toxic, Skin Contact-Slightly toxic - can cause skin Allergies, Other-Probable carcinogen. 2) VERMILLION (AKA Chinese Vermillion; Cinnabar; English Vermillion; Pigment Red 106) Ingestion-Extremely toxic, Inhalation-Highly toxic, Skin Contact-Slightly toxic - can cause skin allergies, Other-Forms hydrogen sulfide on combination with stomach acid. Most vermillion today is a combination of less toxic organic pigments. A note about hydrogen sulfide, which is the gas that gives sewers their pleasant aroma. Exposure to low concentrations of hydrogen sulfide may cause irritation to the eyes, nose, or throat. It may also cause difficulty in breathing for some asthmatics. Pigs that ate feed containing hydrogen sulfide experienced diarrhea for a few days and lost weight after about 105 days.
