They are distant relations; to the order of 11th cousins but they do share a common ancestor.

One must rember when investigating this that America did at one point only have a handfull of settlers who typically owned land and therefore had the means to have large families....

As a consequence; these early land owners tend to show up in a lot of family trees and I suspect this would be the case for a lot of Americans if they had the time or resources to go back far enough...
