Until a normal person's immune system is damaged, it should ordinarily successfully combat infections and diseased cell colonies so that tumors never result.

Everyone has some cells mutate from time to time, but people with a healthy immune system never come down with disease because this system destroys such disease very quickly in a healthy person.

Various forms of tissue damage, stress, toxins, injected inoculations, ionizing radiation, oxidative stress, aging / old age, and inflicted wounds can each weaken the immune system. Microbial causes of disease have also been linked with cancer in both animals and humans. The tissue repair system is triggered to happen by hormones and electrical signals. Hormones such as estrogen and human growth hormone that are in use during the repair process can turn healthy cells into anaerobic cancer cells that replicate out of control. While in the presence of such cancer triggers, the immune system may not be able to eliminate a large volume of diseased cells being generated.

HIV AIDS and chemotherapy both destroy the immune system (previously mentioned) which fights diseased cells before they replicate to form tumors.

Some medical doctor cancer scientists believe that tumor cells are the body's own immune system that is switched on to rapidly encapsulate a fungal colony to prevent its growth and spreading.

Serum levels of vitamin D in recent studies by the University of San Diego, California, USA have been identified conclusively with the immune system's ability to ward off various diseases. Vitamin D is produced in the body when the skin is exposed to suitable levels of ultra violet light for suitable lengths of time. Vitamin D can also be supplemented by pills, capsules or colloidal (liquid) vitamins. In North America in the higher latitudes during the winter months the sun never gets very high in the sky and so shines for a shorter period of time, and through a more shallow angle when it is day time. For this reason, vitamin D serum levels are lower in North America in the Winter time, and so seasonal flus start happening.

The dangers of using UV light tanning beds is that instead of using the beds for periods of 8 to 12 minutes per day, some young people stay in them for extended periods of time that inflicts ionizing radiation damage to multiple layers of their skin tissues, potentially causing a large amount of oxidative stress and thereby cancer. When the damage accumulates over time, the lower layers never regenerate / recover from the inflicted damage, and visual clues begin to appear that the damage is permanent and getting worse.

Doing arc welding (or similar) can produce strong levels of UV radiation that can cause the skin to get very red, indicating that damage is occurring / accumulating. While wearing a full welding mask protects your eyes and face, it will not protect any other exposed skin areas from the intense light that is radiated during the welding. This damage can accumulate and trigger cancer by the tissue repair mechanism described above.
