A peanut is a legume NOT a nut despite common misconceptions. That is why some, myself included, can be allergic to peanuts and not other nuts (cashews, almonds, pistachios, etc.)

The seeds are the two or three round objects in the shell which comprise the entire legume, similar to other members of the bean family. So, depending on which part you call the "peanut", then yes, it is a seed.

Peanuts belong to the bean family, they are 'legumes,' but yes, the "nut" is the seed of the plant.
