It's advisable to look up the breed of your dog on the internet to see what maladies they could possibly get. If your dog is a pup to 4 - 5 years old then don't get the medical insurance. When your dog gets a bit older (Example: German Shepherds have a high rate of hip dysplasia) then get the insurance because it can save you a bundle of money in the long run. I have two dogs and my Cockapoo has two popping hip bones which will need surgery. Our vet has not put this in the report of our Cockapoo (it would be considered a pre existing ailment and would not be covered) and when the time comes then she will let us know and I will purchase the Medical Insurance. In Canada we have to wait three months before it fully kicks in.
I think that pet insurance is definitely worth the price, and to be quite frank, it is too expensive! It is definitely beneficial to get insurance for your animal if they are younger because companies do not cover claims that have pre-existing conditions. But I would still recommend getting insurance if they are a little older because it can cover other conditions as well.
I can't say I've ever considered buying pet health insurance. I don't own any pets, nor do I plan to. Plus, vets are cheap enough that I can't justify that expense if I had a pet.
You can get health insurance whenever you want. However, for younger and healthier you buying health insurance is hassle free process.
