18 U.S.C. 1725 states: "Whoever knowingly and willfully deposits any mailable matter such as statements of accounts, circulars, sale bills, or other like matter, on which no postage has been paid, in any letter box established, approved, or accepted by the Postal Service for the receipt or delivery of mail matter on any mail route with intent to avoid payment of lawful postage thereon, shall for each such offense be fined under this title"

"TITLE 18 > PART I > CHAPTER 83 > Sec. 1725"

It appears that violation of this provision is an infraction, carrying a fine of not more than $5,000 for an individual, or not more than $10,000 for an organization.

"TITLE 18 > PART II > CHAPTER 227 > SUBCHAPTER A > Sec. 3559"

[defining "infraction" in subsection (a)(9)]

"TITLE 18 > PART II > CHAPTER 227 > SUBCHAPTER C > Sec. 3571"

[establishing fines for an infraction in subsections (b)(7) and (c)(7)]

Yes it is legal for a postman to take mail out of your mail box. They may have thought that it was supposed to be sent to someone else.

Yes, it is against the law to steal anything that is not yours. If there was mail in the mailbox, also, then another charge would be added for stealing mail.

Yes, any mail that is delivered to your mailbox is legally yours. The United States Postal Service considers the mailbox to be an extension of your property, making the mail legally yours once it is delivered. However, it is illegal to open or tamper with mail that is not addressed to you.

In a letter when do you use yours faithfully or sincerely?

When you have written a formal letter, it is always important to finish it correctly. Is it a crime to open someone else's mail if it is placed in your mailbox?

No. It is not an offense to open mail that has been misplace into your mailbox. It is an offense, though, to open mail addressed to another individual that has not been placed into your mailbox. However... Mail that is delivered to the wrong address should be returned to the postal carrier, taken to the post office or placed in a postal box to be delivered to the named adressee.

Can you place advertisements on the post supporting a mailbox?

If it is yours then yes, but if it is not I would ask the person who owns the mailbox, or you could put it inside the mailbox if it is not yours. Wrong: As a letter carrier, I can tell you that you are absolutely not allowed to place anything in someone else's mailbox unless you are an official letter carrier. Advertisements, etc. that are placed in mailboxes without postage and not by a letter carrier, are removed from the mailboxes by the letter carrier and turned in to postal management. The violator may be billed for postage for the entire route where the advertisements were found. THE ANWSER IS NO -- According to the USPS Domestic Mail Manual (DMM 508.3.2.5) "Any advertising on a mailbox or its support is prohibited."
