There are several different varieties of basil. The one usually used in Italian cuisine is sweet basil. Holy basil and lemon basil are different (but closely related) species, and Thai basil is the same species as sweet basil but a different variety (sort of like how poodles and dachshunds are both the same species, but you wouldn't likely mistake one for the other).

No, they are 2 different herbs.

Basil is Ocimum basilicum, and Oregano is Origanum vulgare.

Basil is often used to make pesto and oregano is often put on Pizza or on garlic bread.

Holy Basil is also called Tulasi in India, it has 3 varieties :

The first one is called Krishna Tulasi or Shyama Tulasi . It's usually pungent aromatic and has slightly rough leaves, very slightly hairy and has a red-lavender tint on the leaves, veins, flower mainly and stem. This variety is used in India to worship Hindu Gods; very sacred for the Hindus.

The second one is called Rama Tulasi. It has almost the same taste and flavor but has greener leaves and usually a white stem. This also is used in worshiping Hindu Gods.

Last one, the Thai Basil or Asian Basil. It has small, narrow, spear-shaped leaves with a lemony scent and flavor. Widely used in Thai cooking especially in noodles. It also has purple stems and flowers but the leaves are green with purple veins; the leaf is less hairy unlike its other relatives (Krishna Tulasi and Rama Tulasi).

Rounded up Holy Basil has green and purple leaves with jagged edges, the mature branches and leaves are hairy, the flowers also purple. The flavor is pungent slightly stinging, rough and also when bruised giving a sweet licorice scent;it has an aroma akin to that of cloves. The scientific name of Holy Basil is Ocimum tenuiflorum.

Sweet Basil or Italian Basil, on the other hand has Almost 6 varieties, all the varieties will not be covered here, now.Insted, two of the main varieties are about to be discussed:

The first variety is the classic one, called Genovese has highly aromaatic leaves and a spicy flavor, does not have hairy leaves nor the purple tint on any part of the plant.the leaves are smooth, light green, silky and rather larger than Holy Basil. This variety of Sweet Basil is used in making pesto and other pungent dishes.

The second variety is called Sweet Italian Large Basil. It the sweet and most pleasant variety of Sweet Basil. It is a favourite cooking ingredient in Italy.

Rounded up Sweet Basil has a smooth, silky, less pungent, sweeter leaf; it is not hairy and bears green leaves and white stems unlike the purple tinged leave, flower and stem of the Holy Basil. Holy Basil is considered sacred for Hindus in worshiping TulasiDevi, only the Krishna tulasi or Shyama tulasi and Rama Tulasi are used but not the Thai Holy Basil.
