Tarnished Silver
Just because you see tarnish on a silver piece of jewelry, does not mean that the jewelry is not real or that it is of poor quality. In fact, tarnish is a sign that the silver is real and isn’t sterling silver. Even jewelry from Tiffany & Co. will tarnish given the chance.
What causes tarnish on silver jewelry is the chemical reaction of the silver with the air. Any silver jewelry that is exposed to air will tarnish. If you’re thinking of buying a piece of silver jewelry that is showing signs of tarnish, you may be able to get a better deal on it because it means that piece of jewelry has been at the jeweler for a longer period of time. Simply clean the silver jewelry when you get it home and you will have gotten a great deal on a piece of real silver jewelry.
Answer
All sterling silver is marked with .925.
Not all sterling silver jewelry is marked with 925, though much of it is. English sterling is hallmarked with a lion passant, and many American and other pieces may simply say "sterling" without the "925." Other countries have different marks entirely. Get a good jewelry reference book from the library or do a little research online, and you can begin to identify the different marks. As far as tarnish goes, both silverplate and sterling will tarnish.
