Is the Atlantic or Pacific calmer
In the United States, the Atlantic Ocean typically has many more hurricanes than the Pacific Ocean. In fact, only in very rare instances do hurricanes form in the Pacific Ocean and make landfall in the United States. One reason for the relative calmness in the Pacific Ocean is related to the temperature of the water. Because the Pacific Ocean is colder than the Atlantic Ocean, it is more difficult for hurricanes to form and sustain any strength. In contrast, the Atlantic Ocean has warmer waters and the Gulf stream which energize the wind and water and make hurricane formation more likely.
