Is the Bible against lawsuits?

Answer:
The Bible speaks to the spiritual aspect of "trivial" lawsuits by and among believers, and its negative impact on them... as well as the image it leaves with unbelievers as to the kind of God they worship.

"If any of you has a dispute with another, dare he take it before the ungodly for judgment instead of before the saints? Do you not know that the saints will judge the world? And if you are to judge the world, are you not competent to judge trivial cases?

"Do you know that we will judge angels? How much more the things of this life!

"Therefore, if you have disputes about such matters, appoint as judges even men of little account in the church! I say this to shame you. Is it possible that there is nobody among you wise enough to judge a dispute between believers? But instead, one brother goes to law against another brother--and this in front of unbelievers!

"The very fact that you have lawsuits among you means that you have been completely defeated already. Why not rather be wronged? Why not rather be cheated?

"Instead, you yourselves cheat and do wrong, and you do this to your brothers.

"Do you not know that the wicked will not inherit the Kingdom of God? Do not be deceived: Neither the sexually immoral nor idolaters nor adulterers nor male prostitutes nor homosexual offenders nor thieves nor the greedy nor drunkards nor slanderers nor swindlers will inherit the Kingdom of God.

"And that is what some of you were. But you were washed, you were sanctified, you were justified in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ and by the Spirit of our God." (I Cor.6:1-11 NIV)

Lawsuits as we view them today go beyond the "trivial"... with so many of them bordering on the "frivolous," except for the greedy expectation of easy monetary gain they ignite in the heart.

The Bible speaks to God's people, in whose hearts God's Spirit dwells of lawsuits... not to unbelievers.

God's people have disputes and differences of opinion like anyone else... they are still people. But they should be learning in this life how to "judge" matters. Where to go to make descisions.

Jesus Christ has already provided the outline for the "Christian's" procedure:

"Blessed are those who mourn, for they will be comforted... Blessed are the merciful, for they will be shown mercy. Blessed are the pure in heart, for they will see God. Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called the Sons of God..." (Matt.5:4-9).

The question that comes into play, here, is: "What is the lawsuit about?"

Is the believer in court for "some wrong they did?" Or are they being sued for "doing right?" Are they being sued from without the church... or from within?

The Bible addresses both.

Paul wrote to the church in Corinth about their carnal minded bickering. Believers suing believers... a disgraceful public display by those who profess Jesus Christ [is this any kind of invitation to unbelievers to 'come to Christ?' With hundreds of professing 'Christian' denominations in the world - which Jesus is the best one? Might the ones with the fewest lawsuits among them be a deciding factor?]

It's also a deadly deterrent to the spiritual growth of a Child of God.
Children whom God expects to judge and teach the nations His ways when the Kingdom of God is established on earth.

This is a case of so-called "believers" harming themselves before the church, before men... and before God.

Peter touches on persecution from without the church, and how it should be dealt with: "...you are a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people belonging to God, that you may declare the praises of Him who called you out of the darkness into this wonderful light...

"...Dear friends, I urge you, as aliens and strangers in the world, to abstain from sinful desires, which war against your soul. Live such good lives among the pagans that, though they accuse you of doing wrong, they may see your good deeds and glorify God on the Day He visits us.

"Submit yourselves for the Lord's sake to every authority instituted among men: whether to the king, as the supreme authority, or to governors, who are sent by him to punish those who do wrong and to commend those who do right. For it is God's will that by doing good you should silence the ignorant talk of foolish men...

"...live as servants of God. Show proper respect to everyone: Love the brotherhood of believers, fear God, honor the king...

"...it is commendable if a man bears up under the pain of unjust suffering because he is conscious of God.

"But how is it to your credit if you receive a beating for doing wrong and endure it? But if you suffer for doing good and you endure it, this is commendable before God. To this you were called, because Christ suffered for you, leaving you an example, that you should follow in His steps.

"He committed no sin, and no deceit was found in His mouth. When they hurled their insults at Him, He did not retaliate; when He suffered, He made no threats. Instead, He trusted Himself to Him who judges justly.

"He Himself bore our sins in His body on the tree, so that we might die to sins and live for righteousness; by His wounds you have been healed. For you were like sheep going astray, but now you have returned to the Shepherd and Overseer of your souls." (I Peter 2:9-25)

Not all matters end up in court. But people make judgments all the time, all day... every day.

The Bible says to "believers"... behave yourselves and conduct your lives in a righteous and Godly manner that lawsuits or just persecution in general may be of no consequence to you.

Peter's message above is the same as Christ's:

"...Blessed are those who are persecuted because of righteousness, for theirs is the Kingdom of Heaven. Blessed are you when people insult you, persecute you and falsely say all kinds of evil against you because of Me.

"Rejoice and be glad, because great is your reward in heaven, for in the same way they persecuted the prophets who were before you." (Matt.5:10-12)

According to the Bible... if lawsuits should come to you... that's the time for your "light" to shine.

"...You are the light of the world. A city on a hill cannot be hidden. Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead they put it on its stand, and it gives light to everyone in the house.

"In the same way, let your light shine before men, that they may see your good deeds and praise your Father in heaven." (Matt.5:14-16)

Jesus warns His people to prepare themselves for similar lawsuits which He endured:

"...they will lay hands on you and persecute you. They will deliver you to synagogues [churches] and prisons, and you will be [arrested] brought before kings and governors, and all on account of My name.

"This will result in your being witnesses to them." (Luke 21:12-13 NIV)

The Bible is against "unjust" lawsuits. The intent of lawsuits is to dispense justice... so lawsuits aren't, of themselves, bad. The Bible is against "kangaroo courts" like the one that tried Christ.

The Bible prophesys of the "Last Great Day" of God's plan -- "Judgment Day"... the greatest lawsuit the world shall ever know.

And every case tried there will revolve around people's "lives" -- how they lived them -- how they treated other people.

The books of the Bible will be opened as the "measuring stick" by which the judgments will be decided.

"...if any man hear My Words, and believe not, I judge him not: for I came not to judge the world, but to save the world. He that rejecteth Me, and receiveth not My Words, hath one that judgeth him: the Word that I have spoken, the same shall judge him in the Last Day." (John 12:47-48)

"...I saw the dead... stand before God; and the books were opened... and the dead were judged out of those things which were written in the books, according to their works... they were judged every man according to their works." (Rev.20:12-13)

The Bible isn't against lawsuits. God has one against mankind over the way they treat one another. Since creation, man has been in violation against God's laws of "Love" -- the Ten Commandments -- which are summarized into two categories: Love God; Love your Neighbor.

Men cry out for "justice"... and sue one another, thinking justice will be dispensed in man's courts.

So does God cry out for justice. And according to the penalty for transgressing His laws, if it were dispensed [justly], would have resulted in a smouldering planet earth centuries ago.

God is coming back to earth to dispense His Justice... righteously... in an end time lawsuit to end all lawsuits. He's given us an example of how to deal with lawbreakers.

Give them an opportunity to "turn from their wicked ways... repent... and be saved" from the death that our works have earned each of us.

"Turn, O backsliding children, saith the Lord [Jesus Christ; John 1:3]; for I am married unto you: and I will take you one of a city, and two of a family, and I will bring you to Zion: and I will give you pastors according to Mine heart, which shall feed you with knowledge and understanding." (Jer.3:14-15)

God has revealed to us His "mercy and forgiveness"... that men should be learning from... and showing one another [in order to be forgiven, themselves].

"For if ye forgive men their trespasses, your heavenly Father will also forgive you: but if ye forgive not men their trespasses, neither will your Father forgive your trespasses." (Matt.6:14-15)

For centuries, God has been gathering His "witnesses" to testify at the trial of the coming lawsuit. Those witnesses are the books of the Bible. They are the spirit in each of us that has all the "works" of our lives stored away in memory, waiting to be "replayed" at our trial to testify against us... or for us.

"...I sent unto you all My servants the prophets, rising early and sending them, saying, Oh, do not this abominable thing that I hate. But they hearkened not, nor inclined their ear to turn from their wickedness..." (Jer.44:4-5).

There's a major lawsuit on the horizon for all the people of the world. And God shall preside over it. It involves the death penalty for all who fail to "repent" of their transgressions... and seek God's forgiveness.

"...the Spirit of the Lord shall rest upon Him, the Spirit of Wisdom and Understanding, the Spirit of Counsel and Might, the Spirit of Knowledge and of the Fear of the Lord; and shall make Him of quick understanding in the fear of the Lord: and He shall not judge after the sight of His eyes, neither reprove after the hearing of His ears: but with Righteousness shall He judge the poor, and reprove with equity for the meek of the earth: and He shall smite the earth: with the rod of His mouth, and with the breath of His lips shall He slay the wicked." (Isa.11:2-4)

The Bible isn't against lawsuits... if they dispense true justice... like the one slated for the "Last Great Day" -- Judgment Day.

God has shown man how to live righteously... at peace with one another. It's called Love, tempered with mercy and forgiveness. It's called caring about and for one another, instead of selfishly within ourselves with resentment, jealousy, envy and hatred toward one another.

Man's chosen god, Satan the Devil, has led his flock away from God's way. And God's lawsuit shall dispense justice to "the angels that sinned" also.

"...the angels which kept not their first estate... He hath reserved... unto the Judgment of the Great Day." (Jude 6) [Know ye not that we shall judge angels? - I Cor.6:3]

Jesus reveals to us how His "lawsuit" will go down -- the "Last Great Day," Judgment Day. It won't be exactly the "total condemnation day" as many people picture it. Most of those on trial shall have never heard of Jesus Christ, and will have God's Truth revealed to them for the first time, then.

Of that Day, the Bible says:

"In the Last Day, that Great Day of the feast [of Tabernacles, which pictures Jesus' thousand year rule on earth], Jesus stood and cried, saying, If any man thirst, LET HIM COME UNTO ME, and drink. He that believeth on Me, as the scripture hath said, out of his belly shall flow rivers of Living Water. (But this spake He of the Spirit, which they that believe on Him should receive..." (John 7:37-39).

The Bible is not against lawsuits. But men need to be cautious about accusing one another. Those accusations will become "case files" to be replayed on Judgment Day... unless they are blotted out by the mercy and forgiveness of Christ before the trial.
