Panama is in central American, and it is where the canal is found. The Panama Canal is a very significant canal, as it allows ships direct passage between the Pacific Ocean and the Caribbean Sea and the Atlantic. This saves them trying to travel around South America, which would be a huge and dangerous journey. The Panama Canal is man-made and an incredible piece of engineering. Locks

The canal is still being used today. It has three sets of locks that serve as lifts, elevating vessels 85 feet above sea level from the Atlantic or Pacific Oceans to Gatun Lake. The canal transports 4% of world trade and 16% US borne trade. It is used 24 hrs a day, 365 days per year. Tolls for the canal are decided by the Panama Canal Authority and are based on vessel type, size, and the type of cargo carried. The highest toll paid for a transit through the Panama Canal until 1995 paid by the Crown Princess on May 2, 1993; it was US$141,349.97. The lowest toll paid was US$ 0.36 and was paid by Richard Halliburton who crossed the Canal swimming in 1928

Not only is the Panama Canal important to Panama for income and jobs, but it is also considered to be vitally important to the economy of the United States and many other nations ( flow of goods). Many U.S. exports and imports travel through the Canal daily (over 10% of all U.S. shipping goes through the Canal). Therefore, any disruption in the flow of goods through the Panama Canal could directly hurt the U.S. and global economies.
