Matthew's Gospel draws parallels between Jesus and Moses. It tells us that Bethlehem was the home town of Mary and Joseph, but they fled to Egypt out of fear of Herod, who sought to kill all the infant boys under tow years old just as the pharaoh had done in the Book of Exodus.

Luke's Gospel seeks to place the birth of Jesus in a historical context, so has him born during the census of Quirinius, as well as during the reign of Herod, who doed more than ten years earlier. For Luke, Nazareth was the home town of Mary and Joseph, but they travelled to Bethlehem for the census and then returned peacefully to Nazareth a few weeks after Jesus' birth.

John's Gospel says that Jesus was divine and pre-existing. This book suggests that the author did not believe Jesus was born in Bethlehem.

Mark's Gospel was the original New Testament gospel, but does not mention the birth of Jesus.

No. The earliest New Testament gospel, Mark's Gospel, has nothing to say about the birth of Jesus. John's Gospel also nothing to say about the birth of Jesus, except to suggest that its author did not really believe that Jesus was born in Bethlehem or even descended from David (7:41-42): "Others said, This is the Christ. But some said, Shall Christ come out of Galilee? Hath not the scripture said, That Christ cometh of the seed of David, and out of the town of Bethlehem, where David was?"

The New Testament gospels that do tell of the birth of Jesus are Matthew and Luke, although they tell quite different nativity stories. For example, in Matthew, Bethlehem is the home town of Mary and Joseph and they only travel to Nazareth some years later and after a sojourn in Egypt, but in Luke, Nazareth is their home town and they return home peacefully just a few weeks after the birth of Jesus.

Why were there so many chapters written about the last week of Jesus' life?

We have four Gospels in the Bible. These Gospels give us the life of Jesus Christ from four slightly different angles. Because Jesus Christ came to earth to die for mankind's sin on the cross of Calvary this portion of the Gospels is very important. This was Jesus' greatest mission for coming to earth. No other person could appease God for the sins of man except Jesus. He was the God/Man, He was sinless, the Messiah that had been predicted to come for centuries before the event actually happened. He was the only one qualified to die for man and He is the only way to heaven, there is no other way. John 14:6, "I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except by Me."
