It is one of seven (yes there are seven) uniformed services. It is organized under the Department of Homeland Security, but become part of the Department of the Navy during wartime or when the President deems so. The other two Uniformed Services are the United States Public Health Service Commissioned Corps and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration Commissioned Corps.

∙ 12y agono it is not, its is it own branch of service, funded completely by the U.S. government. Not like the national guard the has state influence. Actually, the Coast Guard is under the Dept. Of Transportation and the National Guard is under the Dept. Of The Army.

∙ 14y agoIt's a military branch, with a law enforcement role.. a special exception was made for the Coast Guard to perform law enforcement duties, as the Posse Commitatus Act prohibits the federal military from performing civil law enforcement functions.
