Is the definition of the word conclave a secret meeting?

[Edit]

Yes and no. It all depends on which sense you're defining the word. In its vaguest sense, yes; But it is also used to describe the meeting that takes place with the pope in the catholic church. I have provided both definitions.

Conclave

  • a confidential or secret meeting
  • The set of apartments within which the cardinals of the Roman Catholic Church are continuously secluded while engaged in choosing a pope; The group of Roman Catholic cardinals locked in a conclave until they elect a new pope; the body of cardinals; A private meeting; a close or secret assembly
  • A closed meeting of the College of Cardinals, ordinarily held at the Vatican, to elect a new Pope. The word "conclave" comes from the Latin, "with a key."
