Although grammatically correct, it's a poorly constructed sentence, mainly because of the questionable usage of the word apex in this context. Generally, apex is reserved to describe physical high points, such as the apex of a hill or mountain or of a geometric figure such as a triangle. It could also be used to describe the high point of a heavenly body's arc across the sky. When used in a figurative sense, apex means culmination, which indicates the climax or completion of something, so if that is what the writer wished to convey, the sentence would be greatly improved if it were rewritten thus: She was at the apex of her life. The use of the definite article indicates there is only one apex, whereas the indefinite article suggests there can be more than one apex, which cannot be. Even the rewritten sentence seems awkward, however. When does the apex or culmination of one's life occur, on his or her deathbed? Perhaps the person the author was writing about found herself at the apex of her power or perhaps a long, illustrious career.
