Is the gearbox on a 1985 diesel Golf different from that of a petrol one?

In: VW Golf
[Edit]

Answer

both manual and automatic transmission identifier codes on diesel are different from petrol versions.

Answer

They will both bolt up; however you will find the gear ratio is going to be different. The diesel will have a taller ratio(Higher RPM at a given speed) than the gas, and depending on the exact models there could be a difference in the physical size of the axle shafts. As well sometimes you can run into a problem with the reverse light switch, although easy to remedy.

Hope this helps.
