The "Golden Gate" is a natural formation composed of rocks, vegetation, and the sea. It was named a long, long time ago by mariners sailing into San Francisco harbor. The rocks on either side of the bay entrance were orange-gold in color, and seemed almost mystical when the setting sun shone on them.
Much, much later, engineers designed and built a bridge across the bay at that same location to connect San Francisco and Sausalito. It was the bridge over the Golden Gate, so of course it was named the, "Golden Gate Bridge". It is a titanic structure built of steel, concrete, and paint, of course.
