The Illuminati, of a sort, was real at one time. From 1 May 1776 to 1 April 1785, the group built a small membership in what is now southern Germany, Bavaria to be specific. But, since they attracted negative attention from the Catholic Church, in the form of the Cardinal of Nurmeberg, the Duke of Bavaria (the Cardinal's cousin) ordered them disbanded, and hunted the members down (chasing them to death in some cases).
So, they were real and the why they are not now is simple human jealously, misunderstanding, and perhaps no small part of greed.
