I'm not in the us army i am in the British army but the reason why they have second names on their uniform is that when you join the forces you are only called by your second name as there could be countless Danny's, David's, Josh's and so on but not many will have the same second name therefore easier to find a person you are looking for. Bosma: and that is exactly true in the U.S. forces as well.
