The Pope has no possessions, property or 'wealth' everything he needs to live and carry out his duties is provided by the Church.

Of-course, however, the man gets whatever he wants when he wants it. As long as he keeps the tradition, doesn't rock the boat and does a token bit of charity work on the side, with money which he neither has himself nor needs, then he gets to live comfortably, surrounded by those who would happily give there life for him.

Overall, he pretty much lives a life similar to that of a child: He has an exaggerated sense of his own importance, a child-like ignorance of things he could understand but chooses not too and has all his expenses looked after by people who dote on him and constantly tell people who don't want to know how good he's doing.

Just like a child, he doesn't actually have the money himself but that's because with the sheltred easy life he has: hes just as well off without his name on the bank account.

The pope is not rich. In fact, he receives no pay. All his needs are met by the Church - clothing, meals, travel and personal items. He lives in a simply appointed apartment, the Papal Apartments, in the Apostolic Palace. He is surrounded by a wealth of art work that has accumulated in the Vatican over many centuries but none of it belongs to the pope.

In medieval times, there is no doubt that the popes were the richest men on earth, and often the most powerful. In terms of assets available for the pope's enjoyment and use, a pope's lifestyle must compare well with that of the world's richest people, even if he does not formally own these assets. Modern popes can live in absolute splendour if they so choose, although it is noteworthy that Pope Francis has declined to use the sumptuous papal apartments, choosing instead to live in the still-luxurious papal guesthouse.

There are limits on how the pope can spend the vast income of the Catholic Church, but popes still have broad licence to indulge their whims. Pope Paul VI preferred modern art to the priceless artworks held by the Vatican, so his agents were sent to the art markets of Europe and the United States looking for works to buy, and arranged for private donors to finance the purchase of several hundred valuable pieces.

Since the pope is the head of the Catholic Church he can be said to be the richest man on earth since the Catholic Church is much richer than any institution, company or government on earth.
