An executive branch is the part of government that administers the laws, it enforces them, it makes them happen. It is one part of the three-part system of government theory developed by the French philosopher Charles-Louis Montesquieu. The other two are the legislative branch and the judicial branch. Republican theory requires divided government to ensure it cannot concentrate its power into a few hands and harm the liberty of the people.
