Generally a natural pearl is more valuable than a cultured pearl of similar size because they are much rarer. These days nearly all pearl jewellery is made from cultured pearls from pearl farms in places like Darwin, Australia.

How valuable is a very large pearl?

There is no easy way to answer this question. How large is very large? The Pearl of Allah weighs over 14 pounds and is said to be worth millions. A large cultured pearl's value will vary by its type and quality. A top-quality South Sea pearl as large as 20+ mm may be worth $20,000. How do you determine the wealth of a pearl?

Pearls are not legal entities to which our society allocates wealth. The value of a pearl has two forms, monetary and sentimental. Monetary value is determined at point of exchange, based on market supply and demand for pearl products of various types. The best way to determine market value is to take your pearl to a number of jewelers who routinely determine the value of pearls, and who will likely make you an offer. Sentiment has no monetary value, is often highly prized by the owner, and will in almost all cases inflate the sellers expectations of monetary value at the point of exchange. Qualities of pearls that add value in a monetary transaction are size, shape, quality of surface, orient and luster, and the origin of the pearl. Natural pearls are more highly valued and are differentiated from cultured pearls by examining growth rings using gemological xray.

There are four main varieties of cultured pearls and their cost/value is listed below from highest to lowest. 1. South Sea Pearls $$$$2. Tahitian Pearls $$$3. Akoya Pearls $$4. Freshwater Pearls $

What are the six factors that are taken into consideration when determining the value of a pearl?

== == 1. Type of Pearl (ie: South Seas are much more valuable than Freshwater) 2. Size of Pearl: the larger the pearl, the more valuable it will be. 3. Quality of Pearl: the rounder and more clean the suface of the pearl, the more it will be worth. Round pearls are more valuable than baroque or off-round pearls. 4. Cultured vs. Natural: natural pearls are inherently more valuable than cultured pearls due to their rarity. 5. Color of Pearl: For white pearls, whiter pearls tend to be more valuable than pearls that have yellowish or cream hues. For Golden South Seas, the value is highly dependent on the saturation of the gold color. When purchasing pearls, ask questions before purchasing: First thing is size and shape, the larger and more creamy the color the better, Second is the weight of the pearl itself third is area it is from since some areas are very rare to find Pearls they are of course more costly to locate. There is a grading scale, but I shall see if I can find that again. this is based on depth of color and luminescence. This is all based on it being a salt water raw pearl of course and not a cultured pearl which is seeded in a farmed bed. The six factors tells the value of a pearl as follow: * pearl luster * pearl nackre thickness * pearl surface * pearl color * pearl size * pearl shape Usually, it takes more than 2 years for oysters to cover the irritant with layer upon layer of nacre i.e. to form a pearl. A quality pearl requires certain thickness of nacre. Pearls are valued as gemstones and are cultivated or harvested for jewelry.

Why are natural pearl expensive?

Natural pearls take years to form, and they are basically an accident. If something as small as a grain of sand gets into the oyster, the muscle/flesh becomes irritated; therefore coating the flesh with a cement covering. This continues for many years until you have a pearl. The chances of finding a natural pearl are quite low, thus the value increases.

Is a pearl considered a Gem?

AnswerYes. Quality natural pearls are very rare jewels. The actual value of a natural pearl is determined in the same way as it would be for other "precious" gems. The valuation factors include size, shape, quality of surface, orient and luster.

What is a wooden pearl?

Pearls are 'grown' by some irritant entering an oyster and the oyster growing a layer of mother-of-pearl (nacre) around it. In natural pearls this is usually a grain of sand and it takes a lot of growing to get a pearl of marketable value. Artificial (cultured) pearls are made by people inserting some round object (the size and shape of the desired pearl) and letting the oyster grow a thin layer of mother-of-pearl around it. This object can be anything but shell or porcelain are preferred as they do not break down. If one uses wood then, over time, the wood will eventually rot and the 'pearl' will fall apart. Such pearls are not valuable and are considered a scam. The only way to tell real pearls from artificial pearls is by using an x-ray machine however it is still difficult to tell what the centre object is made of.

Why are all pearls so exspensive?

There are several quality attributes that determine the value of a pearl. Pearl Type = South Sea cultured pearls are the most valuable, followed by Tahitian, akoya and freshwater. Pearl Luster = The quantity and quality of light reflected from the pearl. Surface/Nacre = The surface cleanliness and quality of the nacre. Shape = Round is the most valuable. Color = Color value depends on type of pearl. Size = The larger the pearl, if all other factors are equal, the more valuable it is.

Which pearls are most expensive when buying a white pearl bracelet?

Cultured pearls are valued based on 5 factors: luster, color, shape, surface and size. The most important value factor is luster. Luster is a combination of the quantity and quality of light reflected from the surface of a pearl or just under the surface of a pearl. There are two types of pearls cultured today. They are saltwater and freshwater. Saltwater pearls are bead-nucleated and generally more expensive than freshwater pearls which are tissue-nucleated. The most expensive type of cultured pearl used in jewelry would be South Sea pearls. These are grown primarily in Australia, Indonesia and the Philippines. A strand of large, high-grade South Sea pearls can easily retail for more than $1 million, although most strands range from $10,000 to $100,000.
