You're on it, baby. WikiAnswers, the user-generated community of questioning and answering, combined with Answers.com, the reference information counter-site, are an excellent combination of searching through sources of info whil asking specific questions about your topic.

Google... Faroo... Findzer...

Google is a good place to start! As for sites that combine searching with community, I don't know of much at the moment… I can think of Faroo. I am not 100% sure if it supports the kind of discussion framework you're looking for, though.
