One of the reasons other than the obvious safety issues for getting a permit during renovation is to make sure the assessor reflects the value of the home. And you pay more tax. It is more important to ensure that your home is valued properly, not by an assessor who represents the city and has thousands of homes to value. It is more important to have an appraisal after a renovation. Make sur your home is valued fairly. Did you know over 60% of Americans pay too much property tax? == == Appraisal for property tax purposes is entirely different than for market purposes and I suspect you wouldn't want the market value to be your appraised value! If you feel you can support that you are unfairly valued compared to other houses in the area, certainly challenge it with the assessor. However, considering all things, the cost of full appraisals and independent appraiser testimony at hearings frequently doesn't cover the tax savings you may end up with.
If anything, there are public laws REQUIRING that if you increase the value of your property, that your taxes go up to reflect that. Anything else would be grossly unfair to everyone else who has to pay taxes based on the value of their property.
Property Tax is based on the value of the property. Hence someone with a property worth more than yours, the guy with the mansion 4 blocks down... pay more property tax....so if you and your neighbor have the same homes, you pay the same tax, but...if he puts a million dollar addition on, he pays taxes on the additional million dollar...or pool, or garage, or finished basement, whatever, it all makes sense, seems fair and certainly something that more las can't correct, right?....Oops....your the neighbor in this case.
Is your property worth more now than before you re-modeled? If so, shouldn't you pay more property tax now?
