The real law on guilt by association is a matter of what prosecutors and police can scare you into pleading guilty to. You may associate with whomever you please. This is your first amendment right. There are laws against "criminal association" (like the mafia or street gangs) whose purpose is criminal activity. Also it is illegal to "conspire" to commit a crime. Simply being with another person during the commission of a crime could make you an "accessory" if you helped them in any way to commit or to conceal the crime. You might also become liable for their crime if you were involved in another crime at the same time. An example of this is the "felony murder rule". For example if you were committing a robbery with someone and that other person caused a death, you would also be guilty of murder.

It is being assumed guilty of something or tainted in some way because you know someone who has a bad reputation. So, for example, if some relation of yours was guilty of some crime, people would look at you with suspicion, purely because you were related even though you had nothing to do with anything criminal.
