Answer:

There is a anti theft system built into the 2001 Malibu that may self engage shutting off the fuel pump (passlock system) When this happens turn the key to the ACC position for 10 to 15 min. The theft light will flash. When the flashing stops the cars computer will reset. Turn the key off and then try to start.
