Is there any difference between the soon-to-be-generic Adderall XR and the new Vyvanse by Shire Pharmaceuticals that would justify switching to Vyvanase given that both claim to last up to 12 hours? |
Answer
Vyvanase and Adderall both exert their effect in the brain through the same active chemical (dextroamphetamine). The difference between them is that they use different mechanisms for slowing the release of active drug, and that Adderall contains the inactive levoamphetamine and Vyvanase does not. Having looked over the prescribing information for Vyvanase, it sounds like the time release mechanism in Vyvanase is significantly better, and therefore you should expect a smoother 12 hours of effects with fewer peaks and valleys. Vyvanase may also have fewer side-effects than Adderall due to the absence of levoamphetamine. People's bodies differ in their response to drugs, so the only way to know which drug will work better for you is to try them both. One thing that is certain, though, is that Vyvanase will be more expensive, probably by a large margin.
