Is there any way to get married in Mississippi at age 16 without parental consent? |
[Edit] |
Answer
Unless the state statutes have changed, and in my opinion they should be... The age of consent to marry for a girl is 15 and a boy is 17..go figure! Being married is not a recreational pasttime. It is hard work, very hard work. Wouldn't it be better to sit down and have a heart to heart with each others parents, before even considering such a life changing decision? Please, THINK, THINK, and THINK again!
Answer
Mississippi requires a person to be *21* in order to get married without parental consent. The age to get married *with* parental consent is: girls 15, boys 17. Now, I don't know how long that has been the law in Mississippi so maybe it was recently changed?? But I do know that it is the law as of today's date (02/11/05), because I called the county clerk's office and asked them :)
By the way, Mississippi is only one of two states which requires a couple to be over 18 to get married without parental consent. Nebraska has a requirement of 19. Every other state is 18.
The only way to get married at 16 (in any state) without parental consent is to get court approval, but I have no idea what that would involve.
Answer
Parental consent is needed if under 21 years of age. If parents or guardians do not give consent at time of application, they will be notified via certified mail. The marriage application will be held for three (3) days. Marriage licenses cannot be issued to males under 17, or females under 15 years of age. If the clerk receives a signed authorization from the parents, this minimum age requirement can be waived.
