Is there bacteria in cleaning products? In: Microbiology |
[Edit] |
Answer
Some cleaning products are designed to lyse the cell membranes of most household bacteria.
However there are all sorts of bacteria in almost every environ. Some are highly tolerant to heat, acidity, alkalinity, salinity, heat, cold, and even radiation. They exist in thermal vents, hot springs, tar pits, atomic bomb testing sites, iceburgs, mines, soils, and on almost every surface of the earth. Some of these are from the domain Archea (like bacteria with ancient origins), and have tough cell walls that can withstand some pretty incredible conditions. There are microorganisms in most of your food, but only a few make their presence known when ingested. Many of them are actually beneficial to us.
So it would not be completely surprising to learn that there is microbial life in some household cleaners, especially soaps that are made from animal or plant products.
