To use the Internet on the ipod Touch you have to link to a WiFi service (which may cost you - or you may have a free service in a coffee shop or at home). If you are not in range of a WiFi connection you can not connect to the internet except through a PC USB connection. With the iPhone you are provided with an EXTRA means of connecting to the Internet, that is through the phone service provider's clephone/data link. This private connection to the internet through your mobile provider is charged for. However I belive that that iPhone can also be configured to link to the internet via WiFi (like the Touch) if you are in range of a WiFi service.

No you do not need WIFI to use the iPhone. The iPhone works with either 3G or WIFI. Some apps require WiFi to download or run depending on their size. I find wifi works best though and is faster. YouTube videos are extreemly clear and crisp with wifi.
