It's all a matter of opinion. Any answer on this would be biased. Some people consider it a nerd game, others consider it the best game ever. In my opinion, the monthly price is too steep for any online game. A more budget friendly alternative would be Corum, Flyff, or Rappelz by gPotato. They're free-to-play and have pretty good graphics for a free game.
Not everyone who plays World of Warcraft is a nerd. Some are bankers, rock stars, publishers, and everyday hard working people. World of warcraft appeals to lots of different types of people. Some enjoy the social aspect of the game, some enjoy the economical aspects (crafting/Auction House), some enjoy leading other players (either in a guild or raid), and some just enjoy the beating the heck out of things (mobs or players).

World of warcraft, also known as WoW, is a massively multiplayer online roleplaying game(MMORPG) set in the Warcraft universe. It is developed by Blizzard Entertainment and consists of the following expansion packs: World of Warcraft: The Burning Crusade(TBC), World of Warcraft: Wrath of the Lich King, World of Warcraft: Cataclysm, and World of Warcraft: Mists of Pandaria.
There is no world of warcraft 3. There is world of warcraft, and warcraft 3. Unless you want to refer to Cataclysm. If so then no, you'd fail.
