Most judges are lawyers, and many lawyers are friends with one another. A judge can be the friend of a lawyer, but may not let that friendship influence his/her legal opinions or decisions.
Short answer. Judges are most often lawyers before they become a judges.
You would want a lawyer who has experience defending DUI's. You also want a lawyer who is experienced in the actual court where you'll be tried. A good lawyer will try to avoid the judges who will be harsher.
Lawyers work in many places. Most have an office in an office building where they do their meetings. They spend a lot of time in court houses talking with judges and other lawyers. Some work for corporations and work at the corporate offices. Anyplace there is a business or a courthouse you can find attorneys!
A lawyer or an attorney (the two terms are synonymous).

The "profession" of any Lawyer is exactly that: lawyer/attorney (same thing). Lawyers in the field of criminal justice can specifically work as defense lawyers (either privately, as part of a contract, or for a Public Defender's office or association), or prosecution lawyers (district attorneys, attorneys general, department of justice attorneys/federal prosecutors, or "special prosecutors" appointed by Congress). Lawyers can also be judges, magistrates, or clerks. In the United Kingdom, criminal attorneys are called "barristers."
Of course they should. Being a lawyer is the way in which one has chosen to earn a living. It reflects that one has undergone a certain type of education, if the lawyer is practicing, has become licensed by the Bar of one or more states, and to that extent, has undergone a fairly rigorous background investigation. An attorney is a citizen, and in most cases, a voter, like most other people. In fact, a lawyer, by chosing the law as a profession, may have a greater interest in public affairs than lay people. Judges, in most jurisdictions, must be lawyers. There are ethical prohibitions against judges participating in political affairs because their role is to be impartial decision makers. That is not true of lawyers who are not judges.
That is the lawyers briefcase.
We're both lawyers.
Lawyer and attorney are gender-neutral titles, so both male and female lawyers are called "lawyers" or "attorneys." There is no feminine version of these nouns.
