LASER stands for light amplification by stimulated emission of Radiation. When you get something that produces a laser beam you are causing some sort of emitted radiation. Most commonly though of is a laser which outputs a radiation with a visible wavelength (red through Violet). So when laser radiation hits the skin you get a radiation burn. It is similar to that of a burn you would get from the suns Ultraviolet light.
