18 years of age to own any rifle, shotgun or handgun. However, you must be 21 to purchase handguns or handgun ammunition from any dealers. That being said, your handgun would have to be purchased from a private party, face-to-face.

18, as in most places.

Actually, according to handgunlaw.us, it's 21 to get a permit for concealed carry, but you can open carry at 18 if you legally possess th gun. "As in most places" is misleading. Every state sets its own laws regarding handgun carry. In some states, you must be 21, in some states you can be 18, some states require a permit, some don't, some states require a permit for concealed carry, some don't. Some states allow anyone who legally owns a handgun to open carry, some don't allow it at all, some allow it only with a perimt, some states allow carry only with a permit, but basically don't issue permits (NJ for example), one state, IL, doesn't issue permits and doesn't allow carry of any kind.

The laws are to diverse from state to state to say "most."

STATE law permits ownership at 18, possession at younger ages in special circumstances. A concealed weapons permit requires age 21. FEDERAL law prohibits sale of a handgun to anyone under 21 by a licensed dealer, or a sale by anyone not residing in the same state as the buyer.

Can you carry a gun unconcealed in NC?

It's a bit iffy. You can open carry in NC, but there's also a "menace to the public" law which creates a bit of a grey area.. open carrying through Fuquay-Varina, Holly Springs, etc. probably wouldn't cause anyone to bat an eyelash. Doing it in a place like Carrboro or Cary, on the other hand, would likely get the cops called on you.
