This is a very easy question, I don't even have to look it up. If you are thinking about keeping an exotic, almost any exotic, unless it is lagomorph, reptile, fish, bird, or the occasional more common rodent--basically, if you are thinking about keeping a larger or more unusual exotic mammal, stop that thinking. California has some of the most restrictive exotic pet laws in the country. For some reason, there is worry that, say, the hedgehog will take up some of the resources due our natural fauna. Which natural fauna, you ask? The squirrels? The rats? The mind boggles. But that's the answer.
I know that hamsters, rabbits, snakes, dogs, cats, chinchillas, ALL the common animals are common in California, but in California you can't own a ferret, hedgehog, and some type of ferret, I'm pretty sure you can't own more too!
You are somewhat right but you can own a polecat in California. (skunk) Which is sometimes considered a ferret! Fish are legal too.
I'm sure there are many, but ones I know of for sure are the Quaker Parakeet (a.k.a. the Monk Parakeet) and the ferret. Also the hedgehog.

Yes they are as pets. Zoos might have them though.
According to California law, only the following rodents are not illegal: domesticated races of golden hamsters, dwarf hamsters, rats, mice, guinea pigs, chinchilla (Chinchilla laniger). However, in the list of illegal pets, they do not specifically mention porcupines.
Foxes may not be kept as pets in the state of California. It is also illegal to import these pets or bring them with you when moving from a state that permits them to be kept as pets. You can find out more by researching California Code of Regulations, Title 14, Section 671. Lots of information regarding "Illegal Pets" can be found on the state's "Non-game Wildlife Program" website: http://www.dfg.ca.gov/wildlife/species/nuis_exo/ferret/ferret_issues_table6.html
